Newspaper headlines! Invariably they refer to traumatic events. Accidents, shootings, robberies, assault. We can remain relatively detached from these events if they do not directly affect us. However, if we are the victims, our responses are usually different. The effects of traumatic events can be both physical and emotional and the emotional effects can be long lasting. Many people experience feelings of anger, guilt, panic, emotional lability and confusion.
If the victim does not deal with these feelings they may suffer repercussions that affect personal and work relationships. Sleep, job performance, concentration and stress tolerance can also be affected.
Synergetics's Trauma Assistance service can help the recovery process. We help sufferers deal with the effects of trauma. Our counsellors defuse the situation and counsel the people involved. They also provide information on the normal responses to trauma so that the whole experience is de-pathologised as far as possible.
We respond quickly to calls for assistance, especially in the case of severe traumatic events. For those people who continue to feel the effects of trauma in the days following the events, personal counselling is available and recommended. Sometimes the after-effects are delayed and close liaison with sufferers and their employers can ensure that counselling is made available to persons affected in this way.
