Course Overview:
This Cognitive Behavioral group therapy programme offers a safe, effective, non-drug treatment option for people with sleeping difficulties. This group will meet weekly for 90 minutes for six weeks beginning at the start of each term or whenever there are sufficient numbers to commence a new (wait-listed) group. Prior to the initial meeting, a brief consultation will be held to determine if the group is appropriate for each individual.
What kind of sleep problems can the program treat?
The "Sleep Better ... Without Drugs!" group therapy program has been found to
work well by people who suffer from:
- Trouble falling asleep.
- Waking up frequently during the night.
- Waking up and having trouble going back to sleep.
- Trouble sleeping well without medication.
- Excessive thinking or worrying in bed.
- Worrying about "not sleeping".
- Light sleep, poor quality sleep, non-restorative sleep.
- Irregular or erratic sleep.
- Insomnia associated with chronic pain.
The program has also been used successfully by people who can sleep well anywhere except in their own bed, and people who usually sleep well but have bouts of insomnia from time to time. Many of the people who have benefitted from the program have suffered from several of these problems at once.
How does the program help?
The program contains numerous integrated and interlocking strategies (or things you can do) to help you tackle all of these problems at once.
- The program helps you to diagnose your sleep problem and to work out what YOU need to do to improve YOUR sleep.
- It provides sleep scheduling rules which help you to reset your body clock.
- It presents 20 concrete suggestions that help you to learn to reduce thinking and worrying in bed (Mental Relaxation).
- It helps you learn to relax your body in bed (Physical Relaxation) and to reduce the fear of going to bed, if that is a problem, and to rebuild the confidence that you can sleep significantly better than you are at present.
- Overall, it helps you to change the habit of sleeping poorly into the habit of sleeping better.
