Personal Growth Group

In our busy and sometimes stressful daily life we often don't get the chance to learn more about ourselves and how to achieve our potential or to improve our interpersonal skills. Yet somehow we inwardly know that we can be more creative, zestful, loving, open, honest, responsible and responsive.
Course Overview:
This personal growth group (mixed sexes) will provide you with a unique opportunity to explore issues and personal concerns that emerge in family, couple, personal, work and other relationships. Participants will learn how to resolve personal problems and conflicts. The supportive group atmosphere will enable those who wish to take risks, deal with fears, heal old hurts, creatively explore new ways of being and relating. It is also an opportunity to understand how we enter, maintain and end relationships. Thus it may be particularly interesting to people who want to:
* Understand more about what they bring to relationships
* Develop greater intimacy
* Question some patterns in their relationships
* Understand what keeps them from getting close to and trusting others
Join the group and invest in your emotional, physical and spiritual well-being.
A private meeting with Denis McCarthy (9430-7777), the group facilitator is required before the group meets for the first time.
How does group therapy work?
Group therapy is based on the idea that many of the difficulties that people have in their lives can be understood as problems in getting along with other people. As children we learn ways of getting close and talking to others and ways of solving issues with others. Often, these early patterns are then applied in adult relationships. Sometimes these ways are not as effective as they might be. Many people experience anxiety or unhappiness, feel bad about themselves, or are dissatisfied with life largely because of the unsatisfactory state of important relationships. Groups offer an opportunity to learn more about these "interpersonal" patterns no matter how they got started.

Do therapy groups really help people?
Studies that have compared individual and group therapy approaches indicate that both are about equally effective. The difference with groups, of course, is that a group has to form, and the members need to get to know each other a bit, before it can be of the greatest benefit. The main difference between a non-therapy group and a therapy group is that in the latter, the leader has a responsibility to ensure that the members stay focused on their goals for self-improvement and that everyone participates in this.
Why is an Interview is required before joining this particular group?
To make sure this group is appropriate for you, you will be asked to meet with the counsellor leading this group before joining. This will also help you feel welcome and well prepared to meet the other members. The leader will discuss with you how to get the most out of group and help you clarifying group expectations and defining your personal goals. Most clients will have done some preparatory work with a counsellor or therapist for 3 weeks to 3 months prior to starting in the group.
