Anxiety Management Group

Mastering anxiety, panic, fears/phobias.

Course Overview:
People experiencing Anxiety are frequently misunderstood, and thought to be suffering from nerves or over sensitivity. However, Anxiety is a very common disorder, with over one million Australians suffering from it. Many people visiting their doctor with physical complaints are primarily suffering from Anxiety Disorders (e.g., Social Phobia, Panic Disorder & Generalised Anxiety Disorder) that are undiagnosed. Anxiety and chronic worry profoundly affect people's work, social, and family life and may lead to alcohol abuse if untreated. However, Anxiety is a very treatable condition with a number of successful treatments readily available.

Signs and Symptoms of Anxiety Disorders
·     Panic Attacks
·     Phobias
·     Obsessions or Rituals
·     Persistent Worry
·     Nervousness
·     Tension
·     Exaggerated Fears
·     Poor Concentration

Research has shown that a form of psychotherapy that is very effective for anxiety is cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). CBT is based on the idea that anxiety as well as a number of other mental health problems can be improved by identifying and challenging false, illogical and negative thinking that causes and maintains our negative emotions. The cognitive component of CBT helps people change thinking patterns that keep them from overcoming their fears. The behavioural component of CBT seeks to change people's reactions to anxiety-provoking situations. A key element of this component is exposure, in which people confront the things they fear. Another behavioural technique is to teach the person deep breathing and visualisation as an aid to relaxation and anxiety management.
