Jealousy & Beyond
Is the Green-Eyed Monster Threatening Your Relationship?
Learning to Manage Romantic Jealousy

Course Overview:
Jealousy is a powerful and complex emotion. Some people view romantic or sexual jealousy as evidence of love, whereas others see it as a sign of personal insecurity and defective relationship. Whether viewed as instinctive or learned, good or bad or both, jealousy is an issue for all persons who seek to understand and improve their intimate partnerships. The understanding and management of your own jealousy is unlikely if not impossible without a working knowledge of the psychological mechanisms and the social patternings of jealousy which are common to us all. In this workshop participants will have an opportunity to learn about and discuss the nature of jealousy and to learn how to cope with and use the experience of jealousy as an occasion for creative work on themselves and their relationship.

Methodology:
Participants will have an opportunity to learn about and discuss the nature of jealousy and to learn how to cope with and use
effective strategies to better manage jealousy.
Content:
This weekend (OR eight-week) mixed group is aimed for individuals experiencing, or who identify as having experienced, jealousy in relationships. Focus of the group is on facilitating an understanding of the dynamics of jealousy and its deleterious effects within relationships (romantic in particular). An important assumption which frames the approach to the group is that jealousy is not an innate personality trait which is fixed, stable and therefore shameful, rather it is a contextual process which involves both members of a relationship to both trigger and sustain its harmful effects.
Session One introduces the purpose and meaning of the group and establishes rapport among group members; Session Two concerns understanding personal jealousy responses; Session Three covers triggers of jealousy; Session Four is on the limits of jealousy; Session Five is about communicating what you need in relationships; Session Six processes and solidifies skills gained during the previous sessions; Session Seven engages with individual goals; Session Eight reviews progress and makes plans for on-going change. The manual is 33 pages long and includes handouts and a selected bibliography.
GOALS: To increase participants' understanding of the internal and external processes of jealousy in their current relationships, as well as how to modify or manage their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors when facing a potentially jealousy-triggering situation.
TARGET: Individuals who have identified jealousy as a significant problem in their relationships. Members need not currently be in individual therapy, but some availability to insight-oriented work is preferable. Because students do not typically seek therapy with complaints of jealousy, other considerations for this group may be conflicts in relationships, poor self-esteem/insecurity in the relational realm, and insecurity when not partnered. Individuals with impulse-control problems, or who appear unable/unwilling to consider themselves as active contributors to relationship difficulties are not appropriate for the group.
THERAPIST: Denis McCarthy is a Clinical Psychologist who has researched and published a thesis on Romantic or Sexual Jealousy. He has lectured and run workshops on jealousy at the University of Western Australia..Since entering private-practice in 1987 he has seen and treated a large number of individuals and couples for whom jealousy was a problem. He has acquired a reputation as a couple therapist with expertise in dealing with jealousy and related issues. He is comfortable in working with traditional and non-traditional individuals, couples and families. He has been interested in "alternative lifestyles", in new forms of relationships since the late sixties.
