Biofeedback as Behavioural Medicine

Behavioural Medicinewhich emerged in the 70s is a broad, multidisciplinary area of research and practice that deals with the interaction of behavioural and biomedical science knowledge and techniques relevant to health and illness and the application of these techniques to prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. (Schwartz and Weiss, 1978). The roots of mind-body therapy can be traced to ancient Greece, and more recently to eighteen century "mental physiologists".

Biofeedback, one of the first behavioural medicine intervention techniques, is used to achieve voluntary (conscious) control over normally autonomous (unconscious) physiological functions.

Appropriate research has demonstrated that biofeedback is an established non experimental treatment for the following diagnoses:

BIOFEEDBACK & EEG BIOFEEDBACK

Biofeedback training teaches how to consciously change and control the body's vital functions that are normally unconscious. It uses readings primarily from muscle tension and/ or skin temperature to treat such disorders as hypertension, incontinence, headaches, chronic pain, and anxiety disorders.

EEG biofeedback
uses feedback information from brainwaves. These brain waves reflect different mental states such as attention and concentration. EEG-biofeedback (or neurotherapy) has been developed over the past 30 years in the USA and Europe. It is used to treat a variety of problems, including insomnia, ADHD, anxiety, panic, stress, PTSD, addiction, mood, depression, fatigue, seizures, migraines, and chronic pain. Denis McCarthy is the first clinician in W.A. to be trained in neurotherapy (www.eeginfo.com) and in HeartMath (www.int-a1.com/heartmath). HeartMath, which incorporates a heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback process, is "a unique stress reduction technique that is unusually effective for reducing anxiety and improving performance." - American Institute of Stress.

Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation
& Quantron Resonance System (QRS ), both backed by 30 years of scientific knowledge, numerous clinical trials and empirical tests, are used in the clinic to treat anxiety, insomnia, depression, low energy, tension, sporting injuries, osteoarthritis, aches, chronic pain.

It is estimated that we have over 100 billion neurons (also called nerve cells or brain cells), which is about the number of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. Here are also trillions of supportive cells in the brain called glia. Each neuron is connected to other neurons by up to 40,000 individual connections (called synapses) between cells. Multiplying 100 billion neurons times 40,000 synapses is equivalent to the brain having more connections in it than there are stars in the universe. A piece of brain tissue the size of a grain of sand contains 100,000 neurons and 1 billion synapses, all "talking" to one another. - Daniel Amen
